Sex, Love & Lies in Filmax Pickup ‘Every Side of the Bed’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Musical comedy is the third in the wildly popular franchise that kicked off in 2002 with ‘The Other Side of the Bed,’ followed by ‘The Two Sides of the Bed’ in 2005

Spain’s Filmax has grabbed international rights to “Every Side of the Bed,” the third installment of the hit musical comedy franchise that first kicked off in 2002.

Packing a production partner punch, “Every Side of the Bed” is produced by Telecinco Cinema, Weekend Studio, Impala, Lightbox Animation Studios and Todos Los Lados de la Cama AIE, with the participation of Mediaset España, Netflix and Mediterráneo Mediaset España Group.

The original, titled “The Other Side of the Bed” (“El otro lado de la cama”), lit up the Spanish box office to become the highest grossing pic that year.

Director Emilio Martínez Lázaro and writer David Serrano reteamed in 2005 with sequel “The Two Sides of the Bed” with some of its original cast, Ernesto Alterio, Maria Esteve and Alberto San Juan, reprising their roles. Variety praised its “lively mix of frothy pop and romantic wrangling” and declared that its “more substantial script and a more mature air…result in a slightly darker, richer experience.”

Both captivated audiences with their inventive spin on musical comedies, featuring dynamic choreography and songs drawn from some of the biggest hits in Spanish and Latin pop music.

The new installment 20 years later is the directorial feature debut of Samantha López Speranza (TV series “The Favorite 1922”) from a screenplay penned by Carlos del Hoyo and Irene Bohoyo.

“Every Side of the Bed” follows former lovers Javier and Carlota who, after decades apart, are furious to learn that their children, Óscar and Julia, plan to marry. In 2025, who still believes in exclusive, heteronormative relationships—with so much left to explore? Haven’t they taught their kids better? With little help from Paula (Óscar’s mother), Rafa (a self-styled anti-toxic guru), Pilar (the wedding planner) and their friend Carlos, Javier and Carlota do everything they can to sabotage the wedding. Despite their kids belonging to a more open and fluid generation, the parents’ chaotic meddling threatens to upend everything. Because in love and sex, the only rule is: Nothing is ever certain.

Said Filmax Head of International Ivan Díaz: “’Every Side of the Bed’ is part of one of the most emblematic franchises in Spanish cinema and we are extremely proud to be working on this project along with our friends at Telecinco Cinema and the rest of the producers involved.”

“The previous installments marked an era in Spain, connected with audiences in a very special way and achieved undeniable commercial success,” he added, underscoring the film’s high energy and humor as surefire elements for international success.

Alterio and Pilar Castro return for this iteration and are joined by a young cast led by Jan Buxaderas (“Suspicious Minds”), Lucía Caraballo (“You Keep the Kids!”), Sergio Abelaira (A Widow’s Game”) and Leire Aguiar (“Through my Window”).

The pic also features special appearances by María Esteve, Alberto San Juan, Guillermo Toledo, Secun de la Rosa and Natalia Verbeke, beloved actors who starred in the original films in the franchise.

The film is produced by Álvaro Augustin (“Pan’s Labyrinth”), Ghislain Barrois (“Spanish Affair”), Tomás Cimadevilla (“The Other Side of the Bed”) and Eduardo Sainz de Vicuña.
