CONTENT AMERICAS: Streamer Max and Catalan public broadcaster 3Cat have greenlit a six-episode crime thriller produced by Arcadia in Spain and to be distributed internationally by Barcelona-based Filmax.
Filmax is here at Content Americas this week presenting Ravalear (6×45′) to the market under the international title Not for Sale.
Created by Pol Rodriguez, Ravalear is directed by Rodriguez and Isaki Lacuesta, co-directors of Segundo Premio, the film selected to represent Spain at the 2025 Oscars.
The plot is inspired by a true story from Rodríguez’s family. In the show, after almost 100 years of history and three generations, a popular and beloved restaurant in Barcelona’s Raval neighbourhood is due to be sold to an investment fund, which demands the family who run it to leave the building – but the family decide to fight back.
The screenplay is by Isa Campo, Isaki Lacuesta, Edu Sola, Alfred Pérez-Fargas, Roger Danés and Maialen Vélez. Documentary filmmaker Justin Webster (Muerte en León), who co-wrote the plot with Rodríguez, has been tasked with “imbuing this fiction with a realism typical of the documentary genre.”
“I want to tell a current story that truthfully reflects some of the great conflicts of our society,” said Rodríguez. “But I don’t want to wallow in drama; I want to explain this social conflict through a thriller full of suspense, where the tension is increasing, little by little, until it leads the protagonists to suffocation – an asphyxiation that will force them to react and strike back.”
Shooting will begin during the second quarter of this year and will take place in the Raval neighbourhood and other various locations in Barcelona.
Ravalear will feature an ensemble cast led by Enric Auquer, María Rodríguez, Quim Ávila, Sergi López and Noor Ul Huda. It will premiere on Warner Bros Discovery’s Max streamer in Spain in 2026 and later on 3Cat.
Iván Díaz, head of international at Filmax, said the company is now very active in the TV arena, both with its own productions and by replicating the film model: looking for powerful productions to be created in Spain and other territories to take their sales international.
The series is produced by Arcadia (As Bestas, El Cuerpo en Llamas) and Supernova in coproduction with Belgium’s Umedia. In addition to the participation of Max and 3Cat, it is supported by ICEC and the Creative Europe MEDIA programme.
