Filmax Boards International Sales on Basque-Language Thriller Series ‘Mouths of Sky,’ Premiering at San Sebastián (EXCLUSIVE)

A sequel to ‘Mouths of Sand,’ the Bilbao-set noir from Koldo Almandoz stars ‘Querer’s’ Nagore Aranburu and bows in Official Selection

Filmax has taken international rights to “Mouths of Sky” (“Zeru Ahoak”), the four-part detective mystery that bows in the Official Selection at this year’s San Sebastián Film Festival.

A sequel to “Mouths of Sand,” the Basque-language series is directed by Koldo Almandoz (“Mouths of Sand,” “Ghost Ship”) and penned with novelist Harkaitz Cano (“Black Is Beltza”). It’s set four years after the previous series and follows Nerea García (Nagore Aranburu, “Querer,” “”), the now former police officer scarred by her past who is drawn into a ritual murder case in Bilbao. Her old boss, Lertxundi, proves pivotal as she confronts both the investigation and her own ghosts. The tone looks to be darker than ‘Mouths of Sand’ and is set in the more decadent corners of Bilbao.

Ivan Díaz, head of international at Filmax, added: “When we sold ‘Mouths of Sand,’ we were left wanting more. It was clear that such a special universe deserved continuity. Now the world has grown with even more production value than before.”

With its aerial night shots, tracking of cars through lit tunnels and pulsing soundtrack it’s intentionally cinematic, looking far more like a Michael Mann crime epic than regional TV series. Aranburu, who may just be the busiest Basque actress at the Festival starring as she does in three other titles in Official Selection is joined by a cast that includes Josean Bengoetxea (“The Chapel”), Sara Cozar (“20,000 Species of Bees”), Miren Gaztañaga (“The Platform”), and Ramon Agirre (“Money Heist.”)

“‘Mouths of Sky’ gets you hooked right from the get-go and manages to hold the suspense right until the very end,” said producer Marian Fernández Pascal. “Each new episode sees the plot twisting further and becoming darker, more intense and more morally challenging.”

Produced by Garabi Films and Txintxua Films with Basque public broadcaster EiTB, the series will air this fall on EiTB and later on RTVE Play, following its San Sebastián premiere.
