Nineteenth century Spain was a time when to be a prisoner was to be an outcast of society; someone whose rights no longer belonged to them. Shocked by the appalling conditions of women’s prisons, one woman decided to take a stand for social justice and human dignity. Concepcion Arenal was a revolutionary of her era, believing that education, rather than punishment, was the key to rehabilitating offenders. In her role as official visitor of Spanish women’s prisons, she not only improved conditions for women on the inside, but also gave them the belief in themselves that a better life was possible. This film, spectacularly produced by Spanish National TV, tells the inspirational story of some of the most decisive moments in the life of a woman who saw beyond the crime to the person behind it.
