1940. Dominican Republic. Spanish immigrant, Arantxa Oyamburu, and the Dominican, Minerva Mirabal, forge a profound friendship during their childhood in the Dominican town of Salcedo. Years later, the dictatorial regime of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo will put their friendship in danger and determine the two women’s fate.
Arantxa, blinded by her desire to become a dancer, refuses to question the atrocities surrounding the dictator, even going so far as to become his lover in order to achieve her goal. Minerva, on the other hand, is a fearless opponent of the regime, who educates herself to become her country’s first ever female lawyer. Her determination to topple Trujillo and his government leads her to take direct and covert action, for which she adopts the nickname “Butterflies”.
But, when in 1961, Trujillo brutally murders Minerva and her sisters, Arantxa ends up becoming an essential piece in bringing down the dictator and his brutal regime.
